Melexis Streamlines Inductive Sensors Coil Design With A Cloud Tool
Tessenderlo, Belgium 17 December 2024 – Melexis releases a novel web-tool for inductive coil design and simulation. Featuring an intuitive interface, the tool allows for real-time visualization of the coil design and delivers the optimized layout together with a complete performance report.
The simple tool captures Melexis’ inductive expertise and insights, presenting it in a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) that allows engineers to easily design and simulate various coil shapes, including rotary ‘C’ and ‘O’ shaped designs, as well as coils for linear and arc applications.
Developed from the ground-up, this innovative solution provides real-time layout visualization, with configurable parameters immediately reflected on-screen. By shifting the coil design process from the physical world to the digital realm, the solution aims to cut development time and costs, while reducing material waste by alleviating the need for multiple physical prototypes spins.
Within the slick GUI, it is possible to simulate the exact performance of a sensor in relation to ICs from Melexis’ inductive sensor range (MLX90510, MLX90513 and MLX90517), with future sensors added as they are released.
Once the simulation is run, users receive an optimized Gerber file (a standard file format used for PCB manufacturing) for production and a comprehensive performance report that outlines all types of errors, including mechanical assembly tolerances and lifetime errors. To minimize any potential mismatch between the simulation and the real sensor, the feeding wires connecting the coil set to the IC are also accounted for in the simulation. The tool’s configuration is tailored to Melexis’ innovative patented 3-phase based coil design, which is utilized in combination with its inductive sensor range. The tool is equipped to support both two and four-layer PCB designs and can accommodate various sensor topologies including through shaft, side of shaft, and end-of-shaft configurations.
The Melexis Coil Simulation Tool provides accurate results in just a few minutes and can be used by engineers of any background or experience. Through using this tool, engineers can more easily integrate Melexis’ highly accurate and reliable inductive sensing ICs into critical industrial and automotive applications, such as motor position sensors, pedals, actuators, and steering systems.
“This tool has been created to capture Melexis’ extensive inductive simulation knowledge and to make it readily available to engineers worldwide, completely free of charge,” said Lorenzo Lugani, Product Line Director at Melexis. He continued “By moving the R&D process into the virtual domain, engineers can redefine their development process for inductive sensors, leading to significant reductions in costs, efforts, and material wastage.”
The tool has already been tested by a limited number of Melexis customers and has been extremely well received.
