For your green ICE only

Making the last generation of combustion engines as green as possible!

The electrification of the car comes with a transition period in which affordable electric cars and environmentally friendly ICE vehicles are both needed. Thanks to the most accurate pressure sensor ever made, the last and latest generation of ICE engines can be used without being a burden for the environment.

The electrification of the automotive industry is necessary and unavoidable in the battle against climate change. The “European green deal” and more specifically the “Fit for 55” initiative are key steps in the acceleration of the transition to pure electric cars. It is expected that by the end of the decade, half of all new cars and vans sold in Europe will be pure electric. That number is supposed to be going to 100% by 2035 as by then any combustion engine would be banned. At a global scale, the current projections lead to a 50/50 ratio by the middle of the next decade. Overall, there are still 2 to 3 decades of producing new vehicles relying on fossil fuels. It is of prime importance to make these last generations of internal combustion engines as environmentally friendly as possible.

Fighting climate change goes hand in hand with improving air quality in urban areas. For that purpose, emission limiting norms are imposed on vehicle manufactures. The euro 7 norm released in November 2022 seeks a balance between pushing the last generations of internal combustion engines to become greener while keeping them affordable. This way the majority of Europeans can still purchase greener new vehicles instead of dirty second hand ones until electric cars are more affordable.

Melexis completes its PCB-less pressure sensor IC platform
Greenify all the ICE engine management applications with only one modular technology

Melexis is all about inspired engineering that helps both the planet and the people. Melexis launched a family of new pressure sensors with a performance never met in the automotive industry. Global warming is proportional to CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Pressure sensors regulate the fuel and thus reduce its consumption. They make sure that fuel vapors and leaking combustion gasses are brought back in the combustion chamber. This prevents them from being released to the atmosphere. Pressure sensors in an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) help to reduce nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions. They do so by sensing the amount of recirculated exhaust gasses and by trapping the residual combustion particulates in the exhaust filter. Last but not least, pressure sensors in the SAI (Secondary Air Injection) keep vehicles within the emission limits in all circumstances. For example, when the engine is cold, the pressure sensors enable a fast warm up of the catalytic converter with the so-called secondary air injection. All these applications benefit from a sensor that maintains its performance over an extended life time. The Euro 7 norm requires vehicles to be clean even after 10 years or 200.000 km.

Making the last generation of combustion engines as green as possible!
Complete PCB-LESS pressure sensor IC platform

By launching a family of absolute and relative pressure sensors with analog and digital outputs that do not require a PCB, Melexis offers the ultimate plug and play solution. Customers and OEMs can now greenify all the ICE engine management applications with only one modular technology. In times of economic inflation, this reusable platform technology helps customers with economies of scale and speeding up the time to market. All customers benefit from this technology as the specific challenges of each market segment have been taken into account: accuracy, stability, extreme temperatures, overvoltage conditions, robustness, high speeds and corrosive media. The number of integration steps at the customer is extraordinarily reduced. At the same time, the high performance of the sensor is not at stake.
